In European history, the Middle Ages, or Medieval period, lasted from the 5th to the 15th century. Probably from Cologne or Essen, the cross demonstrates the use of several medieval technologies such as figurative sculpture, casting, filigree, enamelling, gem polishing and setting, and the reuse of Classical cameos and engraved stones. Mathilda is shown kneeling before the Virgin and Child in the enamel plaque. "Mathilda Cross" made for Mathilda, Abbess of Essen, 973-1011, with the body of Christ being a slightly later replacement.
